Guests on Song of Flowers 1996-1997 New Year's cruise will welcome the start of the New Year with a celebratim that is unlike any party you have ever experienced. By special invitation of the Prince of the ancient Balinese Kingdom of Gelgel, you are invited to the Royal Temple of Mengwi for a Balinese New Yea?s'Selamatan.' Guests will be greeted at the Temple gates by a throng of villagers in traditional festival costume, playing bells and bamboo instruments in a marvelous cacophony of sound and color. Wide smiles and welcoming greetings are everywhere. After donning a traditional 'selendang' temple sash, you're ready to join the torchlit procession to the Temple grounds. Here, drinks are handed round, and a traditional dance of welcome starts the festivities. Around the courtyard are small kiosks displaying Balinese crafts. Now the pace quickens, and a new dance begins. You are witnessing the drilling 'Kecak,' or Monkey Dance of the Ramayana, where 100 male dancers representing Hanuman's monkey army battle the evil Rawana in order to rescue the beautiful wife of Rama.
After this riveting performance, your appetite is whetted for another sensory experience. Under umbrellas set with Balinese lanterns, your table awaits for dinner. And such a feast you have never known. One hundred beautiftilly costumed Balinese ladies - offering almost as many courses of tempting delicacies - will serve guests at table in the royal or 'Rajalaya' manner.
As midnight approaches and the romded tones of the gamelan orchestra begin to play, m the inner temple platform appears the fiercest and most evil creature imaginable, the dreaded witch Rangda. Her adversary is the halflion, half-dog Barong, or good spirit. As the gamelan tempo increases, the classic battle ensues between the dark forces of evil and the light forces of all that is good. Rangda puts the good soldiers into a dangerous trance and it takes a Balinese priest of considerable strength to revive them.
We won't tell you the ending, except that in Bali, good always conquers evil. And now as the old year is replaced with the new, you are invited to join in the dancing and celebration. The spirit of the New Year has been properly and auspiciously welcomed.
